The Rifugio Mandron Città di Trento (so called because it was built by the people of Trento in the fifties) is the gateway to the realm of ice. Not just because of the close-up view of the Mandron glacier, but also because of the nearby centre for the study of ice, that the SAT (Association of Trentino Mountaineers) has dedicated to Julius Payer, with its permanent exhibition on glaciology. Little wonder, then, that inside the Città di Trento there is also a sledge used in 1928 to search for the missing from the Italian airship which crashed on the North Pole ice pack. But don’t worry if you are not handy with an ice axe and crampons: the view of the nearby glacial lakes alone is well worth the walk up from the Valle di Genova. The ascent to Rifugio Ai Caduti dell'Adamello takes 3 hours (partly on the glacier) while to Cima Presena via Passo Presena takes 1 ¾ hours (difficulty EE). The walk to Lago Scuro is, instead, easy, taking approximately 1 hour on footpath no. 209, which goes up to Passo Maroccaro (difficulty E).
