Opening day dedicated to Marco Pantani.
Two decades since of the saddest stages of the Giro d’Italia for Pantani and for his millions of friends and faithful fans, Campiglio will be commemorating one of Italy’s greatest champions, a man who wrote the history books of road bicycle racing.
It was in 1999 when, here in Madonna di Campiglio, Pantani was forced to drop out of the Giro at a point in which he had an advantage of nearly six minutes on his closest rival, Paolo Salvoldelli.
This great athlete, whose dream of a repeat at the Giro d’Italia slipped through his fingers, has an unbreakable bond with Madonna di Campiglio. On Friday, 6 September, the area will be hosting a tribute event in the form of a promotional mountain climb on bikes. It will be both a sporting event and a charity benefit in support of the Marco Pantani Foundation, with a portion of the registration fees for the promotional event going to the foundation.
