Climbing from 450 m to 750 m at Malga Caino, this 4-km trail is nothing short of an open-air museum.
Peasant culture and its ancient trades are brought back to life amid woods and meadows, remnants of the daily lives and labours of local people and their enduring oneness with nature and the land. Dotted along this easy, 4-km walk are traces of the past, like the ancient forge and mill.
The same fairytale atmosphere hangs over the Orto della Strega (Witch’s Garden), where science, history and magic unite. Brigida, one of Valle del Chiese’s best-known witches and an expert in medicinal plants, lived around 1470 and was burned alive by the Inquisition. Trenches from WWI are a stark reminder of the Italian Front, while a lime kiln, the site of a charcoal kiln, a bird-hunting tower and the old Caino farmstead at the highest point of the trail have also been refurbished. A small yet picturesque river park on the Rio Caino stream lets travellers relax and admire the scenery.
