Hands on the Land: Creating Objects and Relationships to Care for Places Shaped by Overtourism
Hike in Val Danerba with Michela Bortolozzi, artist and artisan, founder of Relight Venice.
Michela Bortolozzi (1986) is a Venetian artisan and artist whose work bridges art, sustainable design, and the enhancement of local heritage. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts and completing two master's degrees (one at IUAV University and one in Marrakech, where her project was awarded for its social impact), she further developed her craft through experiences in Palestine, Morocco, South Africa, and Kenya. She has collaborated with the Pinault Collection, the Venice Biennale, and the National Gallery of Cape Town.
In 2023, she opened Relight Venice in Cannaregio, where she creates sculptural candles and sustainable handcrafted objects inspired by Venice. Since 2022, she has involved women inmates from Venice’s female prison in the production process, combining craftsmanship with social inclusion. Featured in the Louis Vuitton City Guide and selected by the Homo Faber Guide, she spoke at TEDx Venezia in 2025 on craftsmanship, sustainability, and the future of cities.

Route description: Starting from the Boazzo Dam parking area, we will climb a steep stepped trail winding through fir trees and rocks coloured by lichens.
Upon reaching the top of the trail, a wild hanging valley, carved by the force of a secondary glacier, will open before us. We will follow the Danerba stream along the valley’s final gentle and mostly level stretch, leading us to the mountain hut above.
