The Changing Forest: Signs, Stories and the Future of Forests in the Face of the Climate Crisis
Hike to Mount Durmont with Giorgio Vacchiano, researcher in Forest Management and Planning.

Giorgio Vacchiano is a researcher in Forest Management and Planning at the University of Milan. His work focuses on simulation models that support sustainable forest management, as well as strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation and the study of natural disturbances in temperate European forests.
For many years, he has been actively involved in teaching and science communication and has published numerous articles in international journals. In 2018, Nature magazine named him one of the world's eleven most promising emerging scientists, recognizing him as one of the researchers who are “making their mark on science.”
He is a member of the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF), where he coordinates the Communication Working Group, and of the Ecological Society of America (ESA). He is the author of The Resilience of the Forest (La resilienza del bosco, Mondadori, 2019) and serves as President of Climate Media Center Italia.

PROGRAMME:

08:30 AM Meeting at the Passo Daone parking area
Route description: From Passo Daone, a mountain pass frequented by migratory birds heading south in autumn, we will ascend steadily along the steep slopes of Mount Durmont.
Leaving behind the upper edge of the Scots pine forest, we will reach the summit. Surrounded by alpine grasslands, we will observe a landscape of striking contrasts, where heavily human-shaped valleys meet wild and untouched ones, creating an ideal habitat for a variety of animal species.
