A journey into the First World War, following in the footsteps of the women who climbed the slopes laden with burdens to serve the Austrian military forces.
When the First World War broke out, the men were sent to the far-flung battlefields of Galicia and Serbia. This meant that it fell to the women not only to care for and preserve the land and possessions of each family, but also to support the army. Every day, young mothers and daughters set off laden with goods such as cement, planks, latticework, twisted iron wires and other provisions to supply posts located along the mountain slopes and peaks. Val Masun (namely, "Valley of the Women Porters") takes you back in time along one of the many paths trodden by these young women. It leads to the Ringia and Pura alpine huts, then up a steep path to Bocca di Tortavai, and finally to the peaks of Cima Cadria and Monte Nozzolo.
From the top of Val Masun, at Bocca di Tortavai - where you will find an underground fortification that can be used for shelter in case of rain - you can continue along Sentiero della Pace (Path of Peace) to the summit of Monte Cadria (2,254 m). This evocative, scenic and historically rich route will take you back to Malga Ringia.
Don't miss a visit to Forte Carriola, a monumental fortification erected by the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the dawn of the First World War. The fort is located along the road that climbs towards the Deserta Area.
Continue your journey on La Via delle Valli, where you can choose to explore any of the 50 proposed valleys. Find out more at: www.campigliodolomiti.it/laviadellevalli.
You will find signs and stamps in the valleys from July 2025.
For those who are well-trained, follow Sentiero della Pace (Path of Peace, signpost SAT 455) from the Bocca di Tortavai pass in the direction of Bocca dell'Ussol. A splendid, scenic route along the crest of the Ledrensi Alps leads to the end point of the route in Val Gaverdina.
