Il Rifugio del Papa.
It is here - at an altitude of 3,000 metres - that Papa Wojtyla came to ski on the Adamello glacier together with the President of the Republic, Pertini (who merely observed him smoking his pipe). It was July 1984. This is a refuge built in an extreme position, near a military barracks used by the Italians during the Great War, on the edge of the largest glacier in the Alps, a destination for many mountaineers and high-altitude hikers. Due to the retreat of the ice that has changed the balance of the slope, the Refuge has been completely renovated.
