ALPINE FEARS COMPARED, with local cultural organisers and a special guest appearance by Marco Martalar, ‘the sculptor from Vaia’.
PROGRAMME:
9.00 am: meet at the Church of St Vigilio (Pinzolo).
Artistic walk between Pinzolo and Carisolo
The original juxtaposition of two tragedies: the ancient tragedy of the plague, depicted in iconography right up to the late Middle Ages in the Dance of Death – a powerful visual reminder designed to exorcise the fear of death – and that of Storm Vaia, the greatest forestry disaster in modern Italian history. A journey of reflection on the fragility of humankind and the fragility of nature – two sides of the same coin – accompanied by the cathartic power of art: on the one hand, the magnificent frescoes by Simone II Baschenis, a masterpiece of 16th-century Alpine art, immortalised on the walls of the little churches of Pinzolo and Carisolo; on the other, the compelling story of a contemporary artist, Marco Martalar, who has managed to create beauty out of tragedy by using timber salvaged from Storm Vaia for his monumental sculptures depicting animals and fantastical creatures.
