PEAKS AND STORMS: THE ART OF SOFONISBA ANGUISSOLA with Flavio Caroli, historian of modern and contemporary art
PROGRAMME:
8.30 pm: Sala della Cultura.
The festival begins by honouring the story of a woman, Sofonisba Anguissola, who made her artistic practice a recognised and honourable profession, becoming the first great female painter in the history of Italian art between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A cosmopolitan artist at the heart of Renaissance Europe, whom art historian Flavio Caroli introduces us to through the most intimate recesses of her soul. The Cremonese painter achieved many great heights during her lifetime (she was lady-in-waiting and painting tutor to Queen Isabella of Valois at the Spanish court) and was able to weather life’s storms with determination and a non-conformist spirit.
*As in a Mirror: The Secret Diary of Sofonisba Anguissola* is the book written by Professor Caroli and published by Rizzoli to mark the 400th anniversary of the artist’s death in 1625, just a few months after the visit of the young Anton van Dyck, who painted her portrait, leaving behind the final image of the legend of Sofonisba.
