BEING THERE WHERE HISTORY HAPPENS
with Nello Scavo, correspondent for “L'Avvenire”, war correspondent
In the age of digital journalism, where many delude themselves into thinking it's no longer necessary to be where things happen, Nello Scavo claims his “proximity” journalism, a testimony at eye level, essential to illuminate the darkness of wars, to give voice even to those who, in difficult contexts, do not have a voice. A laborious and dangerous job, in search of alternative sources, aimed at serious information that creates awareness. An investigative journalist among the most accredited and respected in the Italian and European landscape, in recent years he has investigated mafias, terrorism, migrations, and human rights, closely following conflicts and humanitarian crises in the Middle East, Central and South America, Africa, and Ukraine. His scoops and investigations, picked up by outlets like the New York Times, BBC, and Le Monde, have contributed to international justice investigations on Libya and Ukraine. Since October 2019, he has lived under protection for reporting on the migrant route in the Mediterranean, the ties between the Libyan Coast Guard and the Maltese government regarding pushbacks at sea. Awarded the Cidu Award for Human Rights in 2020. Among his most recent publications: “Kiev” (2022), “Hands on the Coast Guard” (2023), “The Savior of Children. A Ukrainian Story” (2024).
