AI CADUTI DELL'ADAMELLO

Passo Della Lobbia Alta Passo Della Lobbia Alta
38088 Spiazzo It
This will always be “the Pope’s Refuge”, because it was here - at 3000 metres above sea level - that Pope Wojtyla came with President Pertini to ski the Adamello Glacier (although the latter merely watched while smoking his pipe). That was July 1984. The refuge, built in an extreme position on the edge of the largest glacier in the Italian Alps and near a military emplacement used by the Italians during the Great War, is favoured by many mountaineers and high-altitude hikers. Due to the retreat of the ice, which has brought about a change in the equilibrium of the mountainside, the refuge has been completely rebuilt. Open From mid-March to early May From 20 June to 20 September Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut Walks All excursions from the Rifugio Caduti dell’Adamello require mountaineering skills and the ability to move on rock and ice. The ascent of Lobbia Alta is the shortest route (40 minutes), but the Refuge is also a base for climbing Adamello (4 hours) in order to cross over to the Rifugio Carè Alto (5 ½ hours) via Passo di Cavento. It takes about 1 ½ hours to walk to Cresta Croce, location of the Adamello cannon. From the refuge you can also get to the tunnels dug into Corno di Cavento by the Austrian army during the Great War: the services of a mountain guide are advised, given the technical difficulties presented by the route. Due to the value of the artefacts found in them, perfectly preserved by the ice, access to the tunnel is restricted and must be booked on advance (contact the SAT (Association of Trentino Mountaineers) on +39 0461 981871). In winter the refuge is a centre for many ski mountaineering routes and snowshoeing outings: Adamello (3 hours), Corno Bianco (3 hours), Cima Cresta Croce and the cannon (1 ½ hours), Cima Giovanni Paolo II (1 hour), Corno di Cavento (2 ½ hours), Cima Caré Alto (4 ½ hours) and Cima Lares (2 ½ hours).
