Longevity trail: Val Genova

Longevity trail: Val Genova

The Trail

An easy 9.6 km hike (round trip) through the spectacular Val Genova, known as the “valley of waterfalls,” following a trail that runs alongside the Sarca River through forests and over small bridges above the water. The route, lasting approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, leads to the majestic Nardis Waterfalls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Trentino, with a drop of over 130 metres, in an alpine environment rich in water that makes the hike an immersive and highly restorative experience.

Longevity Profile of the Trail

Movement: a moderate-intensity route, suitable for longer continuous aerobic activity compared with a simple walk.

The duration and elevation gain make it ideal for:

  • sustained aerobic activity
  • improving endurance
  • restorative walking in a natural environment
  • broad participation, with minimal adaptation for less physically trained people

Physical load: muscular effort is moderate, with steady aerobic activity and a gradual increase in exertion linked to the progressive elevation gain.

Quantitative Indicators

Average speed: 9.6 km in approximately 3 h 30 min (round trip), estimated speed ~2.7 km/h.
This pace is consistent with a mountain trail hike, including short stops and time to observe the surrounding environment.

Estimated steps: for 9.6 km, approximately 13,000–15,000 steps can be estimated (depending on height, stride length and pace).

Estimated calorie expenditure: for an activity lasting approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes with moderate elevation gain:

  • 60 kg person: approximately 500–650 kcal
  • 70 kg person: approximately 600–750 kcal
  • 80 kg person: approximately 700–900 kcal

Sensory Dimension

The trail unfolds through a rich alpine ecosystem strongly characterized by the presence of water, the dominant natural element of Val Genova.

Sight:

  • Mountain forests: Norway spruce, larch and beech along the route
  • Undergrowth: rich in ferns and mosses due to the high humidity
  • River environments: vegetation typical of wetland areas along the river
  • Clearings and alpine meadows with seasonal blooms
  • Numerous waterfalls throughout the valley (Nardis, Lares)
  • Visual highlight: Nardis Waterfalls, with a drop of over 130 metres

Wildlife:

  • Wildlife: possible presence of roe deer, small woodland rodents and alpine insects associated with wet environments

Hearing:

  • Dominant element: continuous sound of the Sarca River
  • Increasing intensity of the sound near the waterfalls
  • Natural and immersive soundscape

Smell: olfactory stimulation associated with:

  • high environmental humidity
  • forest vegetation
  • fresh valley air

Proprioception and Balance

Walking on a natural trail with small bridges stimulates:

  • coordination while walking
  • postural adaptation
  • awareness of movement in a changing environment

Longevity Summary

This trail works in an integrated way across several dimensions:

  • Movement: prolonged and sustained aerobic activity
  • Stress reduction: strong relaxing effect associated with the presence of water
  • Gentle cognitive stimulation: dynamic and varied environment without technical complexity
  • Social connection: suitable for shared walks and group activities
  • Connection with nature: immersive experience in the river environment of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park
