The hiking trail linking the forts of Forte Larino and Forte Corno offers a captivating journey through mountain landscapes of remarkable beauty, while immersing hikers in a powerful atmosphere of remembrance.
Just over a hundred years ago, the paths running along the western slopes of the Valle del Chiese valley were patrolled by soldiers guarding the territory among the forts and trenches. Today, these same routes provide a deeply evocative immersion into the history of World War I.
The hike begins at the Forte Larino fort, situated at around 800 metres a.s.l., and follows a route that winds its way along ancient mule tracks and historic paths to reach the fortress of Forte Corno, perched on a spur at approximately 1,100 metres. This excursion represents not only a physical challenge, but also offers an immersive journey into wartime history. Covering around 8-10 km, with a succession of ascents and descents over rocky and dirt terrain, the trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Along the way, you will come across trenches and forts dating back to the Great War. The observation posts and well-preserved remains of the forts stand as a constant reminder of a conflict that profoundly shaped this area.
Not to be missed: a visit to the Forte Larino fort, featuring a new multisensory exhibition, and to the Forte Corno fort, where volunteers from the ‘Associazione La Büsier’ association accompany visitors on a unique journey through history.
