A truly important stage, both for the effort it requires and for the majestic views it offers. Not to be underestimated, but very rewarding. The postcard of the day is the pyramid-shaped bulk of Monte Carè Alto.
From Rifugio Fontanabona, following the “Sentiero delle Cascate”, you skirt Pian di Genova (1,108 m) and continue until you meet marker 215 which climbs up Val Siniciagia, a route used during the war by an important cableway. Near Malga Seniciaga Bassa (1,520 m), remains of an Austrian cemetery can be seen. Continuing, you reach Malga Seniciaga Alta (1,942 m), Baita Altar (2163 m, remains of the military cableway station) and Passo Altar (2,385 m) which leads to the Vedretta di Niscli side, at the foot of Carè Alto. Through a former military road, you reach Rifugio Carè Alto (2,459 m, tel. +39 0461 948080, www.carealto.it). In front of the refuge, remains of military artifacts and a small wooden chapel made by Russian prisoners employed during the war in this area are visible.
