The Chestnut Groves of Darzo (the Borei Road) and the "Yellow Gold" of Storo

The Chestnut Groves of Darzo (the Borei Road) and the "Yellow Gold" of Storo

This hike takes you through Valle del Chiese countryside, among flat expanses of Marano wheat fields (Storo’s yellow gold) and slopes covered in chestnut forests.

This slow-paced loop route, within everyone's reach, is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic countryside atmosphere of the lower Valle del Chiese. Two local culinary excellences are cultivated here: the Storo corn, from which the famous yellow flour is obtained, and the Darzo chestnut, for centuries the pride of the Counts Lodron. The route is flat at the beginning and end, and passes through maize fields, while the central part has slight ups and downs.A short uphill stretch from Darzo leads to the Borei road, on the west side of the valley, surrounded by chestnut tree fields.Worthy of mention is the majestic chestnut of Villò di Sotto. This 19-metre high and almost 6-metre wide tree is included in the List of Monumental Trees of Italy (Mipaaf).

In Darzo, don't miss the imposing fresco in Piazza XVI Reggimento Artiglieria dedicated to the town’s miners.
