This challenging, evocative and scenic trek is little travelled but well signposted. It winds through larch and fir forests before climbing to higher altitudes, where you can immerse yourself in lush nature dotted with traces of the First World War.
The Val Siniciaga excursion starts in Val Genova and follows part of Sentiero della Pace (the Path of Peace), passing through sites associated with the First World War. This challenging yet highly rewarding trek offers historical insights and breathtaking views, all within the setting of pristine nature.
During the conflict, the route up the valley was home to an important military cableway.
Near Malga Seniciaga Bassa (1,520 m), the remains of a recently restored Austrian cemetery can still be seen. The trail then continues to Malga Seniciaga Alta (1,942 m) and Baita Altar (2,163 m), where the remains of the military cableway station can be seen. It then leads to Passo Altar (2,385 m), from where you can access the slope of Vedretta di Niscli at the foot of Carè Alto.
Our track ends at Passo Altar, but if we wish to continue, the path leads via a former military road to Rifugio Carè Alto (2,459 m). Near the mountain hut, you can see the remains of military artefacts, as well as a small wooden church that was built by Russian prisoners who were employed in this area during the war.
Continue your journey on La Via delle Valli, where you can choose to explore any of the 50 proposed valleys. Find out more at: www.campigliodolomiti.it/laviadellevalli.
You will find signs and stamps in the valleys from July 2025.
