Located at 2459 meters above sea level, the "Carè Alto-Dante Ongari" refuge is open for the summer season from June to September, has 80 beds and a winter bivouac with 8 beds.
The location of the Carè Alto refuge lends itself to meet the needs of all mountain goers. For mountaineers it is the starting point for the summit of Carè Alto, a summit of great mountaineering interest and great satisfaction, on its slopes it has routes of different degrees of difficulty.
Other surrounding peaks also have interesting climbing routes in environments frequented only by wild animals. Hikers can find routes suited to their abilities and make crossings in wild valleys of rare beauty. Fans of Alpine history and culture have access to trails and artifacts of the Great War, "Mandre" and mountain huts in wild valleys. Families interested in a high-altitude experience can enjoy unforgettable landscapes and sunrises.
Our refuge is an ideal access for visiting the Corno di Cavento gallery. For direct groups, the price of half board includes free transport of mountaineering equipment via cable car to the mountain hut.
Built shortly before the Great War, this high-altitude refuge soon became an imposing military base of the Austro-Hungarian army: supplies went up to the refuge by cable car along the Val di Borzago and were then sorted along the Adamello ice front. Now the signs of war can still be seen among the granite boulders that surround the Rifugio Carè Alto, but there is also a small wooden church built by Russian prisoners to commemorate the history of this place. And higher up - an hour's walk away - a Skoda cannon, exactly where it was a hundredyears ago.
STRENGTH:
Rifugio is in fact the starting point for mountaineers who want to climb the Carè Alto and the Corno di Cavento and for hikers who want to cross the eastern slopes of Adamello.
