EMPATHETIC JOURNALISM with Paola Caridi, journalist, historian and essayist.
PROGRAMME
6:00 PM: at Sala della Cultura.
Paola Caridi's journalism is distinguished by independence and intellectual courage. Her work is grounded in first-hand reporting, direct observation and deep historical knowledge. She looks beyond prejudice and official narratives to explore the human and political complexities of places such as Gaza, Jerusalem and Egypt. Having lived and worked in conflict areas, she gives a voice to people who are often labelled and dehumanised, restoring their dignity through writing that becomes a moral responsibility.
One of Italy's leading experts on Middle Eastern affairs, Caridi combines political analysis with a profound understanding of the region's geography, showing how landscapes, hills and contested territories have shaped the identity and existence of entire communities. In her latest book, Shrouds: An Elegy for Gaza (2025), she transforms her account into a powerful civic reflection on the humanitarian catastrophe that has unfolded in Gaza.
Paola Caridi is President of Lettera22, an association of journalists specialising in foreign affairs, international cooperation and culture. In 2024 she received the Kapuściński Award for her essay-reportage Hamas: From Resistance to Regime (2023).
