A challenging itinerary from Lake Idro to Malga Alpo, following the charcoal burners' paths, immersed in a spectacular panorama and unique places, between history, culture and nature.
On the shores of Lake Idro there used to be, and sometimes still is, the pungent smell of charcoal from the Bondone charcoal burners. From its shores, following the exhalations and the metallic sound of wood transformed into black, sooty matter, this journey to the places of the past begins, passing by the enchanting San Giovanni Castle, home of the Counts Lodron, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake and Valle del Chiese, and Bondone, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy (“Borghi più Belli d'Italia”). Walk through its characteristic alleys and admire the monument to the charcoal burners, then continue walking through the woods and meadows, always accompanied by a splendid view of Lake Idro and the surrounding mountains.
Follow the paths, interspersed with stretches of asphalt road, until you reach Malga Alpo: here you will find the charcoal burner's hut!
Alpo is a popular destination for Hike and Fly enthusiasts, who, once they have reached it on foot, usually return to the lake by paragliding.

THE NEIGHBOURING VALLEYS:
From Val dei Carboner you can reach:
- Val Lorina. Once at the top of the valley, it's possible to continue towards Cima Tombea and then reach Val Lorina. This is a route that can be done over several days, stopping at the bivouac of Malga Alpo di Storo, then continuing towards Cima Tombea and reaching Val Lorina. Once at the bottom of Val Lorina, you can enter Valle d'Ampola and reach the town of Storo. Following the bike path that leads from Storo to Lake Idro, you can return to the starting point, thus completing a loop that connects the three southern valleys of the 'Via delle Valli'.
